Shayna George is working on photography ideas for my upcoming album I'm recording in the spring. One lovely idea inspired a song. The Antique Shop Waltz!
This water's been boiling for days now
The kettle is losing its steam
I can't remember when you said you'd visit
Or if I heard it in a dream
In this house lives a piece of a life I've never lived
Though I've been a visitor once or twice
The walls are lined with whispers
of long forgotten nights.
There's an old antique shop down the road
And that's where I love to dance
Because everything that's old
Gets a second chance.
This teapot knows no company
Though it whistles all day long
It's the sound of lonliness
The story of love gone wrong.
All these dusty, broken memories
Sit here on the shelf
And I dance around each corner of the room
All by myself.
There's an old antique shop down the road
And that's where I love to dance
Because everything that's old
Gets a second chance
The wind blows these dusty memories
And smoke gets in your eyes
They always know I'm on my way
Long before I arrive
You pour me a drink and you ask me my name
But I never tell
"I just came here to dance", I say,
"In a place that knows me well".
There's an old antique shop down the road
And that's where I love to dance
Because everything that's old
Gets a second chance

Okay, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. I will be entering the studio for my second full length album upon graduation in June. For those who are unaware, I am currently completing a Music Arts (voice) and Music Business program with the Nova Scotia Community College. Being in school for the past two years has kept me busy, but has also inspired me with so many new ideas and songs that I can't wait to share with you!
The details are still being worked out, but I'll be recording over the summer months.
So I want to know - what do you want to hear more of? I am slowly but surely narrowing down the list of tracks, but I have way too many songs! I want to hear your opinion. Want more rock, more blues, more jazz, more folk? I have so many songs, I can't decide! You've heard many of them at live shows over the past year or so; what are your favorites?
Do you want CDs? Download cards?
This is your chance to have a say!
Send me a comment or email me at jenny[at]jennymacdonald.com and let me know.
I can't wait to hear from you!
Love, Jenny
The fifteen minute wonder. I think this might be listed as a personal favorite and I just wrote it in about fifteen minutes! I'll give your ears a hint, its in F minor.
I've been dreaming of something beautiful
A photograph of sorts
That lives and laughs and loves and smiles
A photograph I adore
It's a picture perfect romance
If in no one's eyes but mine
It drips from your fingertips
And I catch your love...
With mine.
I've been dreaming of someone beautiful
He looks much like you
And through his eyes he sees the world
From a similar view
He doesn't live beneath the ground
Doesn't hold himself above
And with a man much like you
I could easily...
Fall in love
I've been dreaming of something beautiful
I see it in the clouds
And in my dreams we take the hardest words
And speak them all out loud
It's a picture perfect romance
That knows nothing of fear
It drips from your tired lips
Every time...
you are near
I have been spending some time house hunting over the past few weeks and I wrote this song last night/this afternoon inspired by the search. Enjoy!
I'd like to pack all my things
In a bag tied with strings
and move up on a mountain
Where no one can find me
And I'll spend my hours
Planting gardens of flowers
And I'll pick the best ones
To leave on your doorstep
And at the end of your day
You'll come home to a bouquet
With a note signed, "I sincerely
Hope these brighten your day."
We can sit down over tea
Or wine if you please
No clocks on the walls
To tell you it's time to go
And I'll only leave
Whenever I please
I might just stay here
Until winter has come and gone
I'll have a fire
To rest by when I'm tired
We can warm ourselves by it
When the day has expired.
I'll live a simple life
In a complex time
Dreaming out the window
As the clouds roll by
I'd like to pack all my things
In a bag tied with strings
Throw it over my shoulder
And leave all the rest behind.
I'll start as low
As this valley can go
And work my way up
To see just how far I can climb
When I reach the top
I'll find myself a good rock
Take a seat and wait
Until somebody else shows up.

Just a little something I was working on today to share. Enjoy!
When I was born the world didn't understand
So I walked out on my own without a plan
And to this very day I live in a world that is my own
And it's hard to be homesick without a home.
I've met many, many strangers who I consider friends
And if you ask me for the best ones, I'd say "that depends"
I tend to give my heart to the ones that I know the least
But there's a couple out there who have a bigger piece.
I travel this highway because it's the only life I know
Twenty one houses; twenty three years old
There's always someone out there who thinks that they can tie me down
But if you just let me go, I'll always come on back around.
Though I'm ever-changing, I'm never going far
If you ask me why I like you, it's for who you are
I would never change a freckle; I would never change a hair
If I wanted to be somewhere else, don't you think I'd be there?
I value my time by the company I keep
And the smile on my face when I fall asleep
If I end up anywhere that I don't want to be
I just turn around; I just up and leave
I don' t know what love is but I feel it all the time
It's in all the right places at just the right time
And I've certainly fallen for the devil in disguise
But I won't let that stop me from giving it one last try.
It's hard to find good company for a girl who's on the run
I don't expect anything from anyone
Every time it is the first time; every time it is the last
You know you've got my heart if I keep coming back.
My past has made me wary; my past has made it clear
That girls and boys and boys and girls weren't meant to share
If that's what you're planning then I'll be running for the hills
But I will stick around - if you will.
I've met many, many strangers who I consider friends
And if you ask me for the best ones, I'd say "that depends"
'Cause I don't know what love is, but it's everywhere I go
And it's hard to be homesick without a home.
